The Fort of Agia Mavra
At the way in to Lefkada town, by Ammoglossa, the Fort of Agia Mavra stands proudly a model of fortification architecture of the Middle Ages. Inside the fort ruins still stand of buildings from the days of Venetian domination, such as barracks, ammunition stores, administrative buildings, a hospital and dwellings. There is a lighthouse on the small bastion of the NW side and on the eastern is the church of Agia Marvra. The fort, the walled town and the quarters on the outside took their name from this church.
Cape Lefkatas
The breathtaking view from the lighthouse, the unique experience at sunset time composes an extraordinary setting. Akrotiri Lefkata, which allegedly took the name of the island of Lefkada, is located in the southwest of the island. White cliffs causing awe even today from this monument of nature. From this cape, according to tradition, fell into sea and killed, the ancient poet Sapfo, desperate because of her love to Phaon.
Waterfalls Nydri
A place reminiscent of a work of art and offers absolute peace and tranquility. The fairytale route with wonderful pathways and bridges, among the current waters and the small lakes, leads to the imposing waterfall. The crystal clear waters that fall down from a great height and the picturesque blue –green lake that forms on the base create a magical and environment.
Inland
In the center of the island’s inland, explore Eglouvi, known for the growing lentils, which is one of the main occupations of the inhabitants.
Traditional stone houses, cobbled narrow streets, awaken memories and moments, combining yesterday and today. At a distance of 5 kilometers from Eglouvi is Karya. A mountainous village drowned in the deep green that was given unlimited by the nature. It is built on the green slopes of the mountain and it is famous for its perfect climate and for its unique natural. Wonderful, excellent in art, are the word famous ‘karsanika’ embroidery made by the women of Karya. Beside it is the famous square of the village with plane trees. The visitors can enjoy food or a drink offered by the traditional cafes and taverns. The villages of Sfakiotes welcome you at next. Aspogerakata, Kavalos, Lazarata Spanochori, 5 unique villages where vegetation and stone are dominant. Villages that preserve their traditional architectural character, churches with exceptional bell towers, windmills and watermills, wells and numerous pathways are characteristic of the land of Foteinos, the hero of the homonymous poem by Valaoritis.
